Why has Hatmark Branch gone dry? August 27, 2022 -
A citizen query on NextDoor alerted us that the Accotink Creek tributary of Hatmark Branch had gone dry in East Blake Lane Park in the area adjacent to the Providence Community Center. Observations confirmed there was very feeble and spotty flow upstream of this area and a steady, but tiny, trickle farther downstream. A number of deeper pools still provide refugia for numerous fish. This is a perennial stream with a Resource Protection Area. The weather had been dry, but did not seem dry enough to cause the stream to go dry. We speculated there could be changes in hydrology caused by the I-66 project or other factors, but had nothing to confirm this. Fairfax County Stormwater Planning Division made additional observations and provided the report below. Hatmark Branch is the same tributary threatened by the Pickett Road Connector Trail

The headwaters of Harmark Branch, on the Oakton HS campus, have been recently subjected to mysterious clearing down to the banks.
