2010 Potomac Watershed Cleanup
Accotink Creek Watershed

Friends of Accotink Creek and The Fairfax Watershed Network are partnering with the Alice Ferguson Foundation to coordinate the 22nd Annual Potomac Watershed Cleanup in Fairfax County.

Friends of Accotink Creek and The Fairfax Watershed Network, which includes the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District, invite volunteers to join with others to make our waterways healthy and attractive for wildlife and visitors.

Since 1989, the Alice Ferguson Foundation has spearheaded the Potomac Watershed Cleanup. Now the largest regional event of its kind, the cleanup has engaged over 50,000 volunteers and 375 partners and removed more than 3 million tons of trash from the Potomac Watershed. The detrimental effects of trash are numerous:

  • Trash harms wildlife and water quality;
  • Decreases property values;
  • Hurts businesses, recreation and tourism;
  • Costs local governments precious funds for cleanup and removal;
  • Poorly reflects the pride residents of the region should feel for their neighborhoods.

How can you help? - Join us at one, two, or as many cleanups as you like.

Have friends? - Let them know. Invite them to join. Spread the word. Your club, school, business, or other group is welcome to join!

Are you a leader? - Take charge of one or more cleanup sites, by registering and directing volunteers. We provide supplies for the day of the cleanup, including trash bags, gloves, and sign-in sheets.

See how others contributed to last year's cleanup.

To volunteer to help clean the Accotink Creek watershed, contact Friends of Accotink Creek. Also, check our calendar April May. Or, after March 1st, check the Alice Ferguson web site.

Want to stop litter before it starts? Contact your Virginia legislators to support HOUSE BILL NO. 1115 putting a 5-cent tax on disposable shopping bags.
