Accotink Creek at Rte 620 (Braddock Road) - 8:30am-1pm Fairfax - Duane Murphy, Philip Latasa Friends of Accotink Creek and Friends of Accotink 703-599-3328 or 703-599-3328. Can accomodate 40-60 volunteers. This site is suitable for children. The handicapped will have a somewhat restricted area so please RSVP so we may discuss. *Bring hip boots or waders and heavy gloves for option of collecting trash from stream. Directions to Calamo Branch: From I-95 just outside the Capital Beltway take Rt. 644 W (Old Keene Mill Rd.). At the first light turn left on Spring Rd. Make the 2nd right on Calamo St. We meet at the first corner, Calamo St. and Ridgeway Dr. See MAP.
Directions to Lake Accotink Park: Beltway exit 54 B (Braddock Road) east 1/2 mile to right at Heming Ave. to rear entrance. Or from I-95 take Old Keene Mill Road west to right on Hanover Ave to left on Highland Ave to right on Accotink Park Road to entrance on left. See MAP.
Directions to Long Branch Valley Stream: 495 to Braddock Rd West. Right on Pickett Rd to the bottom of the hill. See MAP.
Directions to US Army Garrison - Fort Belvoir: Directions to center: Take I-95 to the Fort Belvoir/Newington exit onto the Southern leg of the Fairfax County Parkway (Route 7100), continue until the end of Fairfax County Parkway (T-intersection with traffic light) and turn left onto Route 1 (North). Proceed one block to next traffic light turn right onto Pohick Road, which is the Tulley Gate entrance. Once you proceed through check point on Pohick Road continue to first traffic light. Turn right onto Theoto Road. Follow Theote Road to Vet Clinic and turn right at the stop sign, onto Warren Road. Follow Warren Road to the bottom of the hill and turn right onto Swift Road, then right onto Little Road. The ABWR Center is ahead on the right - next to the Archery Range, Building 780. At the Tulley Gate Visitor Center the driver will need to request a day pass to access the post. To obtain an day pass the driver will need to show vehicle registration, proof of insurance and valid driver license. All vistors will need valid picture id to access post. See MAP. |
More information for Accotink Creek at Rte 620 locationCombined "Friends of Accotink Creek" and "Friends of Accotink" event!Accotink Creek and Cross County Trail from about a half mile north of Rte 620, Braddock Road, south for at least half a mile in Lake Accotink Park. MAP of meeting place We will go as far south as time permits along the trail and creek, leaving trash bags along the trail, so we can be at the 1:00 p.m. after-cleanup-celebration at the Lake Accotink Park patio near the snack bar for hot dogs, snacks and soft drinks.
We will meet at 8:30 to sign in, briefing at 8:45, at the After signing in, the briefing and distributing trash bags, we will walk to stream or drive to a cross street nearest Braddock Road Bridge over Accotink Creek.
During and after the cleanup, thoroughly wash your hands before eating!
Plan to join us at the after-cleanup-celebration; either continue a pleasant hike along the creek and lake about another mile south, or you can return to your car and drive to the celebration. During the 2005 cleanup 5,875 dedicated volunteers removed over 217 tons of trash from 309 cleanup sites in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Washington, DC. There were 87 cleanup sites in Fairfax County. Will you help us do better this year? |
