2008 Potomac Watershed Cleanup

Accotink Creek Watershed
weekends, April 5 thru May 3

Cleanups also will take place in the weeks before
and after those dates.

Friends of Accotink Creek and The Fairfax Watershed Network are partnering with the Alice Ferguson Foundation to coordinate the 20th Annual Potomac Watershed Cleanup in Fairfax County.

Friends of Accotink Creek and The Fairfax Watershed Network, which includes the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District, requests volunteers remove litter at established cleanup sites and seeks volunteers who will serve as site captains--individual volunteers or groups who will establish their own cleanup sites.

Friends of Accotink Creek and The Fairfax Watershed Network will help the captains choose and prepare a site, promote the cleanup, and find volunteers. Site captains will be provided with all the necessary materials for the day of the cleanup, including trash bags, gloves, and sign-in sheets.

Since 1989, the Alice Ferguson Foundation has spearheaded the Potomac Watershed Cleanup. Now the largest regional event of its kind, the cleanup has engaged over 40,000 volunteers and 300 partners and removed more than 1500 tons of trash from the Potomac Watershed. The detrimental effects of trash are numerous:

  • Trash harms wildlife and water quality;
  • Decreases property values;
  • Hurts businesses, recreation and tourism;
  • Costs local governments precious funds for clean up and removal;
  • Poses a public health threat by increasing breeding grounds for virus carrying insects and rodents;
  • Poorly reflects the pride residents of the region should feel for their neighborhoods.

Those interested in becoming a site captain should contact Dan Schwartz at the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District: E-mail or 703-324-1422.

To volunteer at an existing site within Accotink Creek watershed, contact Duane Murphy, E-mail, 703-599-3328 (evenings and weekends). Also, check our calendar March April May after 26 Feb. Or, after March 1st, check the Alice Ferguson web site.
